Spark Firmware Update Troubleshooting

Before Update

Quick Check

Before using the alternative firmware updater below, try these quick fixes first:

  1. Run the updater as administrator (Windows: right-click → Run as administrator).
  2. Unplug and reconnect the USB cable if your computer does not detect Spark 40.
  3. Connect directly to your computer's USB port — avoid using a USB hub.
  4. Unplug other USB devices to prevent potential conflicts.
  5. Try another USB port on your computer.
  6. Try another computer if the update continues to fail.

We recommend performing a Factory Reset after a firmware update if your Spark shows unexpected behavior (e.g., no sound, connectivity issues).

Update Failed or Device Unresponsive

Problem: The firmware update didn't finish successfully, the Spark is unresponsive or 'bricked,' or the LED lights are blinking.

Solution: Use the Alternative Firmware Updater:

Get the updater: Use the chatbot in the bottom right corner. Enter your Spark 40 serial number (found on the rear of the unit, format: S040Cxxxxxxx) or type "Spark 40 Alternative" to get the download link.

System requirements: macOS 10.13+ / Windows 8+. Does NOT support Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS, or Android.

For Mac:

  1. Extract the downloaded file.
  2. Turn on Spark 40 and connect it to your computer via USB.
  3. Right-click Spark40_FWUpdater_with_log.app and select "Open". A Terminal window will open. (If blocked, see this guide)
  4. Wait until Terminal shows "Firmware upgraded!" and Spark 40 powers off automatically.
  5. Disconnect, power on, and reconnect via Bluetooth. Check firmware version in the Spark app.
  6. If unsuccessful, export Terminal text (Shell → Export Text As…) and send to support.

For Windows:

  1. Extract the downloaded file.
  2. Turn on Spark 40 and connect it to your computer via USB.
  3. Double-click Run_Updater_With_Log.bat or right-click and select "Run as administrator". (If blocked, see this guide)
  4. Wait until Spark 40 reboots automatically and LED lights return to normal.
  5. Disconnect, power on, and reconnect via Bluetooth. Check firmware version in the Spark app.
  6. If unsuccessful, send us the log.txt file from the updater folder.

Bluetooth Connection Issue

Problem: After the firmware update, Spark 40 cannot be connected via Bluetooth.

Solution: Navigate to the Bluetooth settings of your device, unpair or forget the previous connection with Spark 40 Audio, and then open the Spark app to connect Tone Control before connecting Spark 40 Audio.
