Having trouble updating your Spark 40 firmware? This guide covers common issues and solutions.
Quick Check
Before using the alternative firmware updater, try these quick fixes first:
- Run the updater as administrator (Windows: right-click → Run as administrator).
- Unplug and reconnect the USB cable if your computer does not detect Spark 40.
- Connect directly to your computer's USB port — avoid using a USB hub.
- Unplug other USB devices to prevent potential conflicts.
- Try another USB port on your computer.
- Try another computer if the update continues to fail.
Troubleshooting
Q: My computer does not detect Spark 40.
A: Try another USB port and avoid using a USB hub.
- For Mac users, try resetting PRAM/NVRAM.
Q: The firmware update didn't finish successfully, or the Spark is unresponsive / 'bricked' / LED lights are blinking.
A: Use the Alternative Firmware Updater (see instructions below).
Q: After the firmware update, Spark 40 cannot connect via Bluetooth.
A: Go to your device's Bluetooth settings, unpair or forget "Spark 40 Audio", then open the Spark app to connect Tone Control before reconnecting Spark 40 Audio.
Alternative Firmware Updater
If your Spark 40 is unresponsive after a failed update, use the Alternative Firmware Updater to recover it.
Get the updater: Use the chatbot in the bottom right corner. Enter your Spark 40 serial number (found on the rear of the unit, format: S040Cxxxxxxx) or type "Spark 40 Alternative" to get the download link.
System requirements: macOS 10.13+ / Windows 8+. Does NOT support Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS, or Android.
For Mac
- Extract the downloaded file.
- Turn on Spark 40 and connect it to your computer via USB.
- Right-click
Spark40_FWUpdater_with_log.appand select "Open". A Terminal window will open. (If blocked, see this guide) - Wait until Terminal shows "Firmware upgraded!" and Spark 40 powers off automatically.
- Disconnect, power on, and reconnect via Bluetooth. Check firmware version in the Spark app.
- If unsuccessful, export Terminal text (
Shell → Export Text As…) and send to support.
For Windows
- Extract the downloaded file.
- Turn on Spark 40 and connect it to your computer via USB.
- Double-click
Run_Updater_With_Log.bator right-click and select "Run as administrator". (If blocked, see this guide) - Wait until Spark 40 reboots automatically and LED lights return to normal.
- Disconnect, power on, and reconnect via Bluetooth. Check firmware version in the Spark app.
- If unsuccessful, send us the
log.txtfile from the updater folder.
