This guide covers everything about using wah and volume effects with the Spark Control X, including expression pedal setup, assignment options, and troubleshooting.
Expression Pedal Setup
The Spark Control X has two 1/4" TRS expression pedal jacks for expanded control over your tone. Connect a compatible expression pedal using a TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable.
Step 1: Connect the expression pedal
Plug your TRS expression pedal into one of the two expression pedal jacks on the Spark Control X.
Step 2: Open the Footswitch Menu
Once your Spark amp and Spark Control X are connected within the Spark app, go to the Tone Page and tap the icon on the left side of the ToneCloud icon to access the Footswitch Menu.
Step 3: Assign the expression pedal
Tap Exp Pedal and assign a command to the slot.
You can assign Wah Pedal LFO or Volume Control:
Assignment Options
The expression pedal can be assigned to the following functions:
| Function | Compatible Spark Models |
|---|---|
| Wah LFO | All Spark models |
| Guitar Volume | All Spark models |
| Music Volume | Spark 2, Spark EDGE, Spark LIVE |
Troubleshooting: Why Doesn't My Pedal Work?
Wah or Volume Pedal Not Working?
If you plugged in a wah pedal or volume pedal (not an expression pedal) and it doesn't respond, this is expected behavior. Here's why:
- Wah pedals are audio effect pedals that process your guitar signal directly. They must be in the signal chain.
- Volume pedals are analog signal controllers that adjust loudness by controlling the audio passing through them.
- Spark Control X does not route audio — it sends Bluetooth control commands to the Spark app. Since wah and volume pedals require a physical audio path, they cannot function through Spark Control X.
What You Need Instead: An Expression Pedal
An expression pedal does not process audio — it sends a control signal (via TRS) to adjust digital parameters in the Spark app. This is the only type of pedal that works with Spark Control X.
What to Look for When Buying
- A TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) expression pedal
- Uses control voltage (CV) for parameter control
- No built-in audio processing — it must be a true expression pedal, not a wah or volume pedal
Compatible expression pedals include: Mission Engineering EP-1, Moog EP-3, Roland EV-5, Boss FV-500, M-Audio EX-P. Check with your music shop to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
