MIDI Control

The MIDI Control feature lets you use external MIDI controllers to control amps, effects, global functions, and preset switching.

MIDI Device Setting

Wired MIDI controllers

  1. Connect your MIDI controller to your computer using a USB cable or a MIDI interface.
  2. Open the BIAS X application.
  3. Your connected device will appear in the MIDI Input Devices list, or it will follow the MIDI routing provided by your DAW.

Bluetooth MIDI controllers

  1. Pair your Bluetooth MIDI controller using your computer’s Bluetooth/MIDI settings.
  2. Open the BIAS X application.
  3. The device will appear as an available MIDI input in the app.

When using BIAS X as a plug‑in, MIDI routing is typically handled by your DAW. Ensure your controller is properly routed to the BIAS X plug‑in track.
To use the MIDI feature, at least one Input Channel must be selected in the audio settings.

MIDI Mode

MIDI Mode is the primary way to assign MIDI controls to parameters in BIAS X.

Entering MIDI Mode

1. Ensure your MIDI device is connected.

2. Click the MIDI button under the Preset name to enter MIDI Mode.

When MIDI Mode is active:

  • All parameters that support MIDI control will become interactive.
  • Click on a supported parameter to open the MIDI assignment window.
  • In the MIDI assignment window, choose one of the following options:
    - MIDI Learn: Move a control on your MIDI device to automatically assign its CC message.
    - CC Number: Manually enter a specific Control Change (CC) number.

Once a MIDI assignment is completed:

  • The assigned control will appear highlighted in yellow.
  • Hovering over the control will display the assigned MIDI CC number.

MIDI Setting Shortcut

In addition to MIDI Mode, BIAS X lets you create MIDI mappings directly from the control you want to use.

Mapping parameters from the Control Panel

For gear parameters, bottom bar functions, or preset switching:

  1. Right‑click on a supported control in the Control Panel (knob, switch, power toggle, slider), a bottom bar function (such as Tuner or Tap Tempo), or a preset in the Preset Menu.
  2. Choose Map to MIDI.
  3. Select MIDI Learn, CC Number, or PC Number (for preset switching).

The new mapping will appear in the MIDI Mapping list under Preset MIDI or Global MIDI, depending on the control type.

MIDI Mapping List

All MIDI assignments can be reviewed and edited in the MIDI Mapping list.

The list is divided into Preset MIDI and Global MIDI tabs.

  • Preset MIDI: Displays all MIDI mappings stored within the current preset.
  • Global MIDI: Shows MIDI mappings that persist across all BIAS X formats (standalone app and plug‑in versions).

Each row in the MIDI list represents one mapping and includes:

  • Type: A category that streamlines setup for different scenarios
    - Power/Toggle: On/off control using a CC message
    - Parameter: Continuous control mapped to a 0.0–10.0 range using a CC message
    - Preset (Global MIDI only): Preset switching using a Program Change (PC) message (Note: VST3 does not support PC messages)
  • Gear: Shows which gear in the signal path is being controlled.
  • Parameter: Shows the specific parameter for that gear.
  • Channel: MIDI channel this mapping listens to (1–16 or All).
  • Message: The MIDI number used for this mapping
    - CC number for Power/Toggle and Parameter types
    - PC number for the Preset type
  • Learn: Allows you to capture a new CC/PC message from your controller.
  • Remove: Deletes the mapping.
  • Indicate: Highlights the corresponding parameter in the interface for easy identification.
  • Add: Adds a new MIDI mapping row.

Save MIDI Assignments

Preset MIDI

  • Preset MIDI mappings are saved within each individual preset.
  • To store changes, you must click Save Preset — otherwise, the MIDI mappings will not be retained.

Global MIDI

  • Global MIDI mappings are saved automatically and apply across all formats of BIAS X (standalone app and plug‑in).
  • Once saved, they persist across presets, ensuring a consistent control setup no matter where or how you use BIAS X.
