Smart Jam is an AI drummer that listens to your chords and generates a matching backing track — Spark amp and the Spark app work together to learn your style and feel.

The 4 Drummers
Tap the Music page in the Spark app, then tap the Smart Jam banner. Swipe left / right to browse the 4 available drummers:
Jarvis uses a real-time approach — see Playing With Jarvis. Dave, Sharon, and Charles listen first, then generate — see Playing With Dave / Sharon / Charles.
Playing With Dave / Sharon / Charles
-
Set a tempo by tapping the TAP button. After an initial tempo, fine-tune with + / - (single tap = 1 BPM; press and hold = 10 BPM), then tap Start.
-
Place your device roughly 0.5 m (1.8 ft) away from your Spark's speakers, with the microphone facing the amp. This gives the best chord-detection results.
-
You'll be given 4 clicks to count you in. If you don't hear the clicks, make sure your device is connected to Spark's Bluetooth Audio and that both your device and the amp's music volume are turned up.
-
After the 4 beats, the drummer starts listening. All Smart Jam drummers currently support 1 chord every 2 beats. Watch the red bar at the bottom of the screen — if the red line fills the whole width, your device's microphone is clipping and results may be inaccurate.
- You can play up to 8 bars. If your chord progression is only 4 bars, tap the checkmark button when it's highlighted to skip the last 4 bars.
-
Once the analysis is complete, choose from 6 tracks generated by the drummer. Swipe left / right (or tap the arrow icon) to preview each track.
-
After selecting a track, you'll land on the Smart Jam detail page — start jamming! Tap Redo if you want to record another chord progression.
Playing With Jarvis
Jarvis listens to your playing in real time and changes with your dynamics and complexity as you play. Follow the same starting steps as Dave / Sharon / Charles, with these differences:
Calibration (first playthrough)
For the best real-time experience, observe the top red bar and calibrate on your first play through:
- At your loudest playing level, the top red bar should almost reach maximum. If it hits maximum, your device's microphone is clipping — turn down your instrument or music volume.
- At your quietest playing level, the top red bar should hit roughly 3 red blocks. This minimum–maximum range gives the best dynamic detection.
- Make sure your guitar is louder than the backing track. Aim for a 2:1 to 2:1.5 volume balance (guitar : backing track).
Feedback & Help
- Tap the Feedback icon in the top-right corner to leave feedback about your Jarvis experience.
- Tap the Help icon (next to Feedback) to review instructions.
Quick tip: mess around with different tones while playing. Using only high-gain or only clean tones won't create the most dynamic experience — Jarvis responds best to variation.
Edit Chords
You can edit the chord progression once you're on the Smart Jam detail page.
Jarvis
- Tap the Edit Chords button at the bottom of the Smart Jam detail page.
- Tap chords on the timeline (or use the arrows) to navigate, then pick your desired chord from the picker below.
- Tap Apply in the top right. The backing track restarts with your new chords.
Dave / Sharon / Charles
- Pause the backing track by tapping the pause button (bottom right).
- Long-press a chord on the timeline. Your selection appears on screen — drag the red indicator at the left / right edges to select multiple bars at once.
- Tap Edit Chord when it appears on screen.
- Select your chord of choice. Tap Apply to change the chord only in the selected section, or Apply to All Parts to change it in every section of the song (Verse, Chorus, and Bridge).
Settings
Tap the Settings icon on the Smart Jam detail page to adjust:
- BPM (Tempo) - fine-tune the playback tempo.
- Bass - toggle the bass track on / off.
- Transpose - shift the track in half-step increments, up to a maximum of an octave up or down.
- Reset to default - restore the initial analyzed (or last saved) settings.
Save a Backing Track
- Log in to your Positive Grid account. If not logged in, tapping the save button will trigger the login prompt.
- Tap the bookmark / save icon on the Smart Jam detail page:
- Dave / Sharon / Charles - top right
- Jarvis - bottom right
- Select a save slot. If all slots are full, you'll be asked to overwrite an existing track.
- To load a track later, go to Menu → Saved Songs → Smart Jam tab. Tap a track to load and start jamming. Use the ... icon to rename or clear a track from a slot.
