If you are having trouble updating the firmware on your Spark MINI, this guide covers common errors and their solutions.
The Spark MINI firmware can only be updated via USB. Make sure Bluetooth is disconnected before starting the update.
Before the Update
Computer Doesn't Detect Spark MINI
Problem: My computer does not detect Spark MINI when connected via USB.
Solution:
- Try a different USB port directly on the computer (not a USB hub).
- Try a different USB cable (use the one that came with Spark MINI if possible).
- Mac users: Try resetting PRAM/NVRAM.
During the Update
Windows 11: Updater Not Responding
Problem: The firmware updater freezes or shows "Not Responding" on Windows 11.
Solution:
- Close the updater completely.
- Right-click the updater
.exeor.batfile → select "Run as administrator". - Close all MIDI and audio applications (DAWs, media players, virtual instruments). The updater needs exclusive access to the MIDI port.
- Check log for
Found MIDI OUT device: Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth— wrong MIDI device detected. Close all MIDI software and retry. - Try a different USB port directly on the computer (not a hub).
- If still freezing, try the update on a different computer.
Error Code Reference
Error 2
Cause: Incorrect update sequence.
Solution: Connect Spark MINI to the computer and launch the updater first , then power on the Spark MINI.
Error 10
Cause: User canceled the update.
Solution: Run the updater again and do not cancel.
Error 11
Cause: Python 2 installation timed out.
Solution: Reboot and try again. If it persists, install Python 2.7.18 manually (see below).
Error 13 / 14
Cause: Python 2 installation failed.
Solution: Reboot and try again. If it persists, install Python 2.7.18 manually (see below).
Error 15
Cause: Firmware install timed out.
Solution: Disconnect USB, force shutdown (hold Power for 10 seconds), then reboot and try again.
Why Does the Updater Need Python 2?
The Spark MINI's Bluetooth module uses Python 2 scripts to communicate during the firmware update. The updater will attempt to install Python 2.7.18 automatically, but this can fail on some systems.
If you see Error 11, 13, or 14 , install Python 2 manually:
- Download Python 2.7.18 from the official Python website.
- Run the installer with default settings.
- Restart the firmware updater.
Python 2 is only needed for the firmware update. You can uninstall it after the update is complete.
Bluetooth Update Interrupted (5%–37%)
Problem: The update was interrupted during the Bluetooth module phase (between 5% and 37%).
Solution:
- Do not immediately reconnect the USB cable.
- Wait 1–2 minutes until Spark MINI shuts down on its own.
- Restart Spark MINI, reconnect USB, and try the updater again.
Device Unresponsive
Problem: Spark MINI becomes unresponsive during or after a firmware update.
Solution: Perform a force shutdown:
- Unplug the USB cable from Spark MINI.
- Press and hold the POWER button for over 10 seconds until the unit shuts down.
- Release the button, then press and hold again until the Power LED lights up blue.
After the Update
Bluetooth Won't Connect
Problem: Bluetooth stops working after a successful firmware update.
Solution:
- Go to Bluetooth settings on your phone/tablet.
- Find "Spark MINI Audio" and tap Forget/Unpair.
- Open the Spark app and connect to Tone Control first, then connect Spark MINI Audio in Bluetooth settings.
No Sound
Problem: Spark MINI is powered on but producing no sound after firmware update.
Solution:
Check volume and output:
- Turn up Guitar Volume and Music Volume knobs on top panel.
- Unplug any cable from Headphone/Line Out jack (speaker mutes when a plug is inserted).
- Check your guitar's volume knob.
Temperature warning: If status LEDs blink red rapidly, turn off Spark MINI, move to cooler location, wait 15-20 minutes.
No guitar sound only: Try different cable → Try different guitar → Check battery (active pickups).
No music playback only: Priority is AUX In > Bluetooth Audio > USB Audio. Unplug AUX cable if you want Bluetooth/USB audio.
Force restart: Unplug USB, hold POWER 10+ seconds until shutdown, then restart.
Factory reset: If issue persists, perform factory reset (back up presets first).
