Spark GO Firmware Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble updating the firmware on your Spark GO, this guide covers common errors and their solutions.

The Spark GO firmware can only be updated via USB. Make sure Bluetooth is disconnected before starting the update.

If you haven't started updating yet:

Before the Update

Computer Does Not Detect Spark GO

Problem: My computer does not detect the Spark GO when connected via USB.

Solution:

  • Try a different USB port directly on the computer (not a USB hub).
  • Try a different USB cable (use the included USB-C cable if possible).
  • Mac users: Try resetting PRAM/NVRAM .

Windows 11: Updater "Not Responding"

Problem: The firmware updater freezes or shows "Not Responding" on Windows 11.

Solution:

  1. Close the updater completely.
  2. Right-click the updater .exe file → select "Run as administrator" .
  3. Close all MIDI and audio applications (DAWs, media players, virtual instruments). The updater needs exclusive access to the USB port.
  4. Try a different USB port directly on the computer (not a hub).
  5. Try a different USB cable .
  6. If it still freezes, try the update on a different computer .

Mac: Python 2 and Error -14

Problem: The Spark GO firmware updater requires Python 2 to communicate with the Bluetooth module. On Mac, the updater will try to install Python 2 automatically — if this fails, you may see Error -14.

Solution:

  1. Download and install Python 2.7.18 manually from the official website.
  2. Restart the firmware updater.

Note: Python 2 is only needed for the firmware update. You can uninstall it afterwards. It will not affect any Python 3 installation on your system.

During the Update

Error Code Reference

Error 2
Cause: Incorrect update sequence.
Solution: Connect Spark GO to the computer and launch the updater first , then power on the Spark GO.

Error 13 / 14
Cause: Computer cannot detect device in update mode.
Solution: Unplug and reconnect the USB cable while staying in update mode, then try again.

Error 15
Cause: Updater path contains non-English characters.
Solution: Move the updater to a path with only English characters (e.g., C:\SparkGO ).

Error 16
Cause: Update aborted mid-process.
Solution: Switch to a different USB port and try again.

Error -3
Cause: USB connection instability.
Solution: See detailed steps below .

Fixing Error -3 (USB Instability)

Problem: Error -3 indicates the USB connection dropped during the firmware update.

Solution:

  1. Check USB connection — try a different USB cable and a different USB port. Connect directly to your computer, not through a hub.
  2. Reinstall USB driver (Windows) — uninstall and reinstall the Spark GO USB Audio Driver, then restart your computer.
  3. Reinstall the updater — delete the current updater, download the latest version, and install it in a path with only English characters (e.g., C:\SparkGO ).
  4. Force shutdown and retry — disconnect USB, hold the Power/Pair button for 10 seconds, reboot the Spark GO, restart the updater, and try again.

Bluetooth Update Interrupted (5%–37%)

Problem: The update is interrupted during the Bluetooth module phase (between 5% and 37%).

Solution:

  1. Do not immediately reconnect the USB cable.
  2. Wait 1–2 minutes until the Spark GO shuts down on its own.
  3. Restart the Spark GO, then reconnect USB and try the updater again.

Force Shutdown

Problem: The Spark GO becomes unresponsive during or after a firmware update.

Solution:

  1. Remove the USB cable from the Spark GO.
  2. Press and hold the Power/Pair button for over 10 seconds until the unit powers off.
  3. Release the button, then press and hold it again until the Power LED lights up blue .

After the Update

Bluetooth Won't Connect

Problem: Bluetooth stops working after a successful firmware update.

Solution:

  1. Go to the Bluetooth settings on your phone or tablet.
  2. Find "Spark GO Audio" and tap Forget / Unpair .
  3. Open the Spark app and connect to Tone Control first, then connect Spark GO Audio in your Bluetooth settings.

No Sound

Problem: The Spark GO no longer produces sound after a firmware update.

Solution: Perform a factory reset. See Factory Reset for Spark GO .

Alternative Firmware Updater

If the standard updater keeps failing, download the alternative firmware updater:

macOS / Windows

System Requirements: macOS 10.13 or later / Windows 8 or later.

  1. Unzip the downloaded file.
  2. Connect your Spark GO to the computer with a USB cable and turn it on.
  3. Run the updater:
    • macOS: Right-click the updater app and select "Open".
    • Windows: Right-click Spark GO Firmware Updater with Logs.exe and select "Run as administrator" .
  4. Wait until the Spark GO powers off automatically.
  5. Disconnect, power on, and check the firmware version in the Spark app (product card → scroll to bottom).

If unsuccessful:

  • macOS: Export the Terminal log via Shell Export Text As… and send it to support.
  • Windows: Send the log.txt file from the updater's folder to support.

If you have tried all the steps above and the firmware update still fails, please contact Positive Grid Support and attach the log file from the updater.
